Artist Statement:
I had a great time creating this Webventure. At first, I was nervous about the amount of images/pages/GIFs/etc., but I quickly found that as soon as I started working on it and getting in the zone, it was way more fun than work. I feel as though this assignment was a great way to combine the skills we have learned throughout the semester. We employed Photoshop skills, hidden links, GIF making, maybe some sound, and just overall digital design to create an enticing Webventure for the viewer (and for myself!). For me, this also included adding animations/proper timing to certain elements/text/etc. that would appear on each page of this project.
My goal with my own Webventure was to give the viewer an escape into a world less seen -- underwater! Especially as someone who lives in a land-locked state and doesn't have the means to travel very often, I found it to be a good way to create an exploration of somewhere unfamiliar. While there are some pieces in my project that are factual (i.e. the Blue Ringed Octopus), I also wanted to throw in some elements that were not true and just served as surprises for the viewer (i.e. the mermaid city). It was exciting to make twists and turns, rather than just creating a boring beach exploration.
I ended up creating nearly 30 pages for this Webventure, which means the viewer probably won't even see all of them the first time they choose their own adventure. I think this made it more fun, even for me during the creation process, because it allows for more twists and turns, and even entices the viewer to start over and play again in order to see what they missed. Beyond the surplus of pages, I also added many Easter Eggs that link to web addresses that open in different tabs. These include YouTube videos, images, shopping websites and more, all for the sake of surprising the viewer and maybe making them laugh.
Additionally, I have six GIFs throughout my Webventure that work seamlessly with the pages they are on. To my surprise, the GIFs were not as challenging as I thought! Maybe I will make more just for fun at some point. These were a great way to add movement/actions to my pages and draw the viewer in even more.
All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed this assignment and could even see myself creating something like this again in the future.
I hope all viewers find this Webventure as a tranquil -- yet gripping -- experience.
