Artist Statement:

In the creation of this soundscape, I felt as though I wanted to create something that represents how I, and potentially others, may feel on the inside during stressful and busy times with classes, homework, a job, family obligations, and more. As we are becoming adults, it becomes more apparent that the amount of obligations, commitments and desires grows as we do. Even though we may, on the outside, present as put-together and having it all figured out, I find that the inside of my head has a lot going on, pretty much all of the time. I often feel jumbled, chaotic and stressed, or even just unsettled with thoughts and assignments constantly running around my brain. It is very hard to focus on one thing at a time when there is so much to be done, and that can feel incredibly overwhelming and cumbersome. Therefore, I felt as though I could demonstrate that feeling through a soundscape.

To execute this, I gathered sounds from our shared folder that were unsettling, disturbing, repetitive, or just obnoxious. This included a pencil clicking, keyboard clacking, busy conversations, a fork tapping a plate, and more that can be observed in my project. To demonstrate how the chaotic sounds and thoughts increase throughout the day as your brain becomes more aware of all of its responsibilities, I started with minimal sounds and morning doves. This then grows to peak feelings of being overwhelmed and chaotic in the middle of the day, which then tapers off again in the night time, replicated by night sounds/crickets, trying to shove the thoughts out to get some rest at the end of the day. However, there are always some thoughts and overwhelming feelings that stay behind, lingering to come again another day in full force.

When listening to this soundscape, the listener should almost certainly feel anxious and overwhelmed, and probably want to turn it off and stop listening! Well, that is exactly the goal, as many people want to stop the noise inside their head, but cannot...
